BATH’S BIG DIG

To create awareness of the archaeology project underway as part of the £360 million SouthGate development to the local community, Multi Development, together with the Museum of London Archaeology Service (MoLAS) and Bath & North East Somerset Council, have announced the opening of an archaeology visitor centre, at the corner of New Orchard Street, Bath. The visitor centre will display information about the work that archaeologists have been carrying out since February when the current redevelopment of this area of Bath started.

The archaeological project is funded by Morley and Multi Development and is being carried out by the MoLAS working closely with Bath & North East Somerset Council’s Archaeological Officer, English Heritage and the Roman Baths Museum. This work has already uncovered part of the Roman and Medieval city walls, as well as the possible location of the ‘Horse Bath’ and ‘Bum Ditch’ shown on John Speed’s map of Bath in 1610.

The visitor centre contains information relating to the site and to its surrounding environs, along with information on the different periods of occupation on the site - from the Mesolithic (Middle Stone Age) period through to Roman and Medieval. As well as being able to look at the information panels, representatives from MoLAS will be in the centre each day from 12-2pm to answer your queries and to display recent archaeological finds. If possible, the displays will change to reflect the work as the excavation progresses.

The Archaeology Visitor Centre will be open from Monday 6th August - Friday 31st August. The opening hours are from Monday - Friday, 9am - 5pm.
